Job Description: We are seeking a talented and passionate Research Engineer with expertise in Chip Design to join our team at Google DeepMind in London. As a Research Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and developing custom chips and hardware accelerators to support our research efforts in artificial intelligence and machine learning. This is a unique opportunity to work on groundbreaking projects at the intersection of AI and hardware design and contribute to advancing the state-of-the-art in AI technology.Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with researchers, hardware engineers, and software developers to define requirements and specifications for custom chips and hardware accelerators.
  • Design, implement, and optimize custom hardware architectures and circuits for AI and machine learning applications, including neural network accelerators, specialized processors, and other hardware components.
  • Conduct research and development in chip design methodologies, algorithms, and tools to improve the efficiency, performance, and scalability of AI hardware solutions.
  • Work closely with external partners, semiconductor vendors, and fabrication facilities to prototype and manufacture custom chips and hardware prototypes.
  • Evaluate and benchmark hardware designs using simulation, emulation, and prototyping platforms to validate performance, power, and area targets.
  • Analyze and optimize chip architectures and hardware designs for power, performance, and area efficiency across a range of AI workloads and applications.
  • Contribute to academic publications, conference presentations, and technical documentation to disseminate research findings and advances in chip design for AI.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field. Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) preferred.
  • Strong background in chip design, digital circuit design, and hardware description languages (Verilog, VHDL).
  • Proficiency in electronic design automation (EDA) tools and chip design methodologies (RTL design, synthesis, place and route, timing closure, etc.).
  • Experience with computer architecture, parallel processing, and hardware accelerators for AI and machine learning (GPU, FPGA, ASIC).
  • Familiarity with AI frameworks and software libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch) and programming languages (Python, C/C++) for AI development.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Prior experience in chip design for AI or machine learning applications is a plus.
